This is the best overnight oats recipe! It is so simple and so delicious! This is the kind of breakfast you’d pay $10 for at a trendy cafe, served in a pretty glass jar. But it’s incredibly easy and inexpensive to make at home.

I am not a morning person, so I do everything I can, to make sure that my morning is as joyful and easy as possible. Overnight oats are one of those things. It is such a relief to take out my overnight oats with maple syrup from the fridge and just relax.

  • Super quick and easy – Just mix your simple ingredients together the night before, pop in the fridge, and the next morning they are done.
  • Perfect make-ahead breakfast for the beginning of the week for multiple days.
  • Easy meal prep in jam jars, mason jars or an airtight container.
  • Freeze extras for backup – Make double batches and freeze half in individual portions. Thaw overnight in the fridge and you’ve got emergency breakfast that tastes freshly made. Perfect for those weeks when meal prep doesn’t happen.
  • Naturally sweetened with a drizzle of pure maple syrup—no need for brown sugar or agave syrup or anything else 😇
  • Simple ingredients – Just old fashioned oats, milk, and pure maple syrup for the base. Add vanilla extract, chia seeds, or Greek yogurt and if you want. That’s it! No corn syrup, no weird additives, nothing you can’t pronounce.
  • Can be enjoyed as cold overnight oats or warmed in a microwave-safe bowl for a comforting hot breakfast.
  • So many ways to customize – Eat them straight up, top with fresh berries, drizzle with nut butter or chopped maple nuts, add chocolate chips or fresh fruit.
  • Works for everyone – Use gluten-free oats for gluten sensitivities, any milk of choice for dairy-free/vegan needs, and the whole family will love them. Way more satisfying than sugary cereal and keeps you full until lunch!
  • Not just for breakfast! – these maple overnight oats make a great after school snack. You know when your kids come into the kitchen ready to devour everything in sight, well now you can hand them something healthy and filling. And shhh, don’t tell anyone, but I have been known to have one for lunch or dinner – I add some chopped nuts, fruit and I am happy 🙂
  • Budget-friendly – Way cheaper than fancy café overnight oats and you control every ingredient. Use whatever milk you like, buy old fashioned oats in bulk, and you’ve got healthy breakfast sorted for days at a fraction of café and grocery store prices!

Ingredients (Makes 1 Serving of Maple Overnight Oats)

Oats, maple syrup, milk, vanilla, chia seeds, each in a little glass bowl on a wooden board.

For exact ingredient measurements of these overnight oats with maple syrup please scroll down to the Recipe Card.

  • Old-fashioned oats – rolled oats provide the best texture. Avoid instant oats or quick oats unless you want really mushy oats 😂.
  • Milk of choice – almond milk, oat milk, dairy milk, coconut milk or any other milk or even water.
  • Pure maple syrup – you can use imitation maple syrup, but the pure stuff does taste better. I buy my maple syrup when it’s on sale or at Aldi.
  • Chia seeds (optional) for a chia pudding effect and added nutrition. (You will need to add extra milk or water though so the oatmeal mixture does not get too dry, as chia seeds absorb a lot of moisture).
  • Vanilla extract (optional) – adds additional flavor.

Optional Additional Ingredients

This is just an example. You can put pretty much any kind of topping on maple oats and it’s foolproof. That’s why this is the absolute best overnight oats recipe 😇

Strawberries, blueberries, frozen raspberies, a banana, maple pecans, yogurt and an apple on a wooden board.
  • Greek yogurt (or any other kind of yogurt) for creaminess and tang. Avoid sweetened yogurt as the sugary taste can overwhelm the maple taste of these overnight oats made with maple syrup!
  • Coconut yogurt – goes amazingly well with maple syrup. Seriously, if you have never tried the coconut and maple syrup taste combo, you should give it a go. It is really, really good!
  • Nut butter for richness and protein.
  • Fresh or frozen fruit toppings like fresh berries, bananas or diced apples.
  • Chopped nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, macadamia nuts,…
  • Honey glazed walnuts or maple roasted nuts – maple pecans are so yum 😋
  • A sprinkle of chocolate chips or grated dark chocolate – because, you know, chocolate goes with everything 😉

Instructions how to make Maple Overnight Oats

Quick instructions: You just put all your ingredients in a jar or cup or whatever container you are using and give it a good stir or shake. Top with fruit, nuts, etc. Place in fridge and wait at least 4 hours. Done!

Maple overnight oats with or without chia seeds and yogurt?

You might be wondering about whether to add chia seeds or not or whether to add yogurt or not. So I have three different jars I made. And you guessed it,

  • one is with just rolled oats, milk and maple syrup,
  • one is with rolled oats, milk, maple syrup and chia seeds and
  • one is with rolled oats, milk, maple syrup, chia seeds and yogurt.

As you can see, they get progressively creamier – but also, you get less and less room to fit in any toppings….ah, the choices we have to make 🤔

Detailed instructions

I like to use Bonne Maman jam jars, because I can just put the lid on and give it a good shake and that’s it! But you can use any kind of container you like.

  1. In a large bowl or directly into jam jars/mason jars/airtight containers, combine the milk with the maple syrup and rolled oats. Stir or shake well to mix the wet and dry ingredients evenly. I use Bonne Maman (13oz) jam jars, but you can use any kind of glass jar or mason jar you like.
  2. This recipe works without chia seeds, but if you do want to use them, to make it even more creamy, now is a good time to add them. But then also add another 2 tablespoons of milk or water, because chia seeds absorb a lot of liquid. Stir or shake until well combined so the oats and chia seeds soak evenly in the liquid.
  3. Add yogurt, if using, and shake/stir again.
  4. Add any other mix-ins like nut butter, Greek yogurt, protein powder or vanilla and stir again gently or leave as is.
  5. Top with fresh or frozen fruit or any other topping you like.
  6. Top with a drizzle of maple syrup.
  7. Cover and refrigerate overnight, ideally for 8 hours, but 2 hours is the aboslute minimum. This allows the oats to absorb the milk and develop a creamy texture.

  • The next day, check out your overnight oats. If you prefer a thinner consistency, add a splash more milk. Otherwise, enjoy cold overnight oats straight from the jar or transfer to a microwave-safe bowl and heat for about 30-60 seconds for a delicious hot maple oatmeal.
  • If you didn’t do so the night before, you can top it with fresh fruit, yogurt, nut butter, and a few extra chocolate chips or nuts for added texture and flavor. But these overnight oats with maple syrup are delicious as is!

Tips & Variations

  • For a creamier texture, include chia seeds or yogurt, which absorb liquid and help thicken the oat mixture.
  • I like to add 1/2 cup plus 1-2 tablespoons milk for every 1/2 cup oats. If you like it drier, just use 1/2 cup milk, but the oats do continue to absorb liquid even after the first night. So they’ll actually get thicker with time if you keep them for day 2 or 3! Plus, if I add chopped nuts or seeds or fruit, I find that 1/2 cup of milk is just too dry for me.
  • Add nut butter or nuts to boost protein content and creaminess—perfect for kids or the whole family.
  • Add bananas and make banana maple overnight oats.
  • Add strawberries, raspberries and blueberries for a refreshing topping.
  • Add a tiny pinch of sea salt – it makes the maple flavor absolutely sing!
  • To prep for several days, make multiple jars for meal prep. These oats stay fresh for up to 3-4 days in the fridge.
  • Add maple pecans or maple walnuts for a pecan pie-inspired breakfast or maple walnut overnight oats.

Storage

  • These maple overnight oats will keep refrigerated for up to 3 or 4 days and actually improve in flavor overnight.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. I love using the Bonne Maman jam jars as they have a wide opening and I can eat directly from the pot 😉
  • You can freeze them. First place them in the fridge for at least 8 hours so they get all nice and creamy. Then put in individual freezer friendly containers and freeze for up to a month.

This is the best overnight oats recipe! The maple flavor is absolutely incredible – you can actually taste the rich, authentic sweetness of maple syrup in every single spoonful, not just a hint of it, like in some recipes. These oats made with maple syrup are so comforting and delicious on their own that I literally eat them straight from the jar without any toppings and feel completely happy.

Overnight oats made with maple syrup topped with raspberries in a glass jar on a wooden board.

Quick-cooking or instant oats can become mushy are not recommended if you want a nice texture. Old fashioned oats aka rolled oats are best for maple overnight oats.

Maple syrup is made from the sugary sap found in maple trees. Sugar is typically made from sugar cane.

Yes! Just use plant-based milk like almond milk, coconut milk or oat milk or vegan yogurt mixed with a bit of water.

This maple roasted nuts recipe will work in both depending on your needs:

Make air fryer roasted nuts if:

  • You are making a small batch and don’t want the hassle of heating up your oven.
  • You want a shorter roasting time.

Make oven roasted nuts if:

  • You are roasting a larger batch, as you don’t want to overcrowd the nuts and can use a larger cookie sheet or even two cookie sheets.
  • You want to save the extra caramalised maple syrup bits you collect on the parchment paper to sprinkle on your nuts.

Yes, it’s very easy to make a vegan version of this roasted nuts recipe. Just substitute melted cococut oil for the butter and you’ve yourself some vegan roasted nuts. 😀

You can eat maple overnight oats warm or cold. Cold overnight oats can be eaten straight from the fridge or microwaved as a warm, comforting hot breakfast. Both ways are delicious – it just depends on your mood!

Yes! This recipe scales up beautifully – just multiply everything by however many servings you want. You can make 3-4 jars on Sunday night and be set for the next few days.

Either line those jars up in a row and pour in your ingredients or make the base recipe in a big bowl and then divide into jars. Customize each one with different toppings. One day maple pecan, the next day banana bliss, then strawberry – you can put anything on these maple overnight oats and they will taste amazing! Or just keep them plain and add a little drizzle of maple syrup on top of each jar. Just remember they stay fresh for 3-4 days max, so don’t go too silly with a 10-day batch, unless your freeze them.

Here’s the thing – overnight oats are totally forgiving! If yours come out too thick (like, spoon-stands-up-in-it thick), just add milk a tablespoon at a time until you get that perfect creamy consistency. Too thin and soupy? Next time, cut back on the milk by 2-3 tablespoons or add an extra tablespoon of oats.

Pro tip: The oats continue to absorb liquid even after the first night, so they’ll actually get thicker if you keep them for a couple of days in the fridge.

Here’s the deal with maple syrup – If you can, 100% pure maple syrup is the way to go. I’m talking about pure maple syrup with just one ingredient on that label: maple syrup. None of that “pancake syrup” or “maple-flavored” stuff that’s basically corn syrup with fake flavoring – you’ll taste the difference right away.

Grade A Dark Robust is hands down my favorite for overnight oats because it has that deep, rich maple flavor. The lighter grades are nice, but the flavor is more delicate and you may end up adding more. Trust me – spend the extra few dollars on real maple syrup and you’ll be so glad you did.

Having said all that, you can use imitation maple syrup. It’s like this – I love Godiva chocolates, but hershey kisses are nice too. So if you are feeding a bunch of hungry kids, or just want to keep the grocery bill to less ridiculous levels, then imitation maple syrup is ok too. Shhh – don’t tell anyone I said that. 😉

Yes, but first place them in the fridge for at least 8 hours so they get all nice and creamy. Then put in individual freezer friendly containers and freeze for up to a month.
