Growing up in a Latvian household, there was always cottage cheese in the fridge. So take this as my Latvian take on guacamole. It’s super delicious and goes with pretty much everything.
And if you do want to adjust this avocado cottage cheese dip recipe to make a guacamole dip, you can substitute coriander/cilantro leaves for the dill and add some lime and chili, and you are good to go 😉

Ingredients for Avocado Cottage Cheese Dip Recipe
Full instructions in the recipe card below.

- Avocados, peeled and pitted. Choose avocados that are without brown spots and that are not hard. If it gives way slightly if you gently push with your fingers, this is good. You don’t want it to be too soft and mushy. Having said all that, this is a recipe where you can use up all those imperfect avocados. Just scoop out the ugly bits and use the rest.
- Cottage cheese – full-fat works best, but you can use low-fat cottage cheese as well.
- Fresh lemon juice
- Lemon zest
- Garlic clove, minced
- Fresh herbs such as chives, dill, green onion or cilantro, finely chopped
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Additions and Substitutions
- Garlic clove – You can also use 1/2 – 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Fresh herbs – if you want a Baltic/Scandinavian flavor for your cottage cheese avocado dip, use fresh dill or chives
- For a Mexican/guacamole flavor, add some cilantro and a pinch of red pepper flakes, and substitute lime for lemon juice.
- Dried herbs – you can use dried dill as well, just substitute about 1 teaspoon dried dill for every tablespoon of fresh dill. You can also use other dried herbs.

Equipment
- Food processor

How to Make Avocado Dip with Cottage Cheese
This dip is sooo easy to make.

- Cut one half of an avocado into smaller pieces if you would like a chunky dip.
- In a food processor, blend 1 1/2 avocados, cottage cheese, lemon juice, zest, and garlic until smooth.

- Transfer to a large bowl and fold in the chives, dill, or whatever fresh herbs you are using and the leftover avocado chunks. I like to use 2 tablespoons of fresh dill, one tablespoon of spring onion and one tablespoon of chives or parsley for that Baltic flavor, but you can use fresh cilantro for a classic guacamole flavor.
- Season with salt and black pepper.
- Your creamy avocado cottage cheese dip is done 😋

How to serve Cottage Cheese with Avocado Dip
- Serve as a dip for veggies and tortilla chips.
- Toast some denser bread and cut it up to use as bread sticks. I used a sourdough with grain bread or a dark rye bread. This denser bread makes for great bread sticks, as they stay fairly stiff and don’t flop over with the weight of the cottage cheese and avocado dip.
- Use as a spread instead of butter or mayo on sourdough bread or Rye bread or in a wrap for a tasty lunch or dinner. My favorite is avocado cottage cheese dip on toasted sourdough bread topped with roasted veggies or topped with honey roasted walnuts.
- Cut up some veggies and toast, and serve with the dip on a cutting board for a lovely cafe-style lunch.

Out and About
This avocado cottage cheese dip goes really well with a rye or sour dough bread, either as a spread or as a simple dip. I toasted slices of one of my favorite breads, Vital Rye from AG Bakery and cut them up into finger sized pieces, easy for dipping.

With my Baltic heritage, I grew up often having a savory breakfast with open-faced sandwiches – usually with cottage cheese. If you are looking for savory ideas for breakfast, you should try this Cottage cheese avocado toast and this shrimp and avocado toast recipe. They are two of my favorites.
